Angry Mob converges on Bournemouth

ANGRY DELEGATES FLOCKED to the Marriott Hotel, Bournemouth last night as the Angry Dentist's Tour reached the southwest. Derek Watson, CEO gave a short but definitive list of things that make him really, really cross, including inspection, testing, unfairness, lack of transparency, injustice, stupidity and lack of pensions for nursing staff. The quick-fire format of the Angry tour means that delegates get to hear five speakers over an hour and a half. Derek said "With an average of 18 minutes for each presentation, if you don't like the speaker or the subject, you don't need to worry because there will be another one along in a miinute." Angry Nurse Michell Pordum said "We should all start a group and go to government to say now we are not going to abide by any of these stupid rules". Nurse Carin Godley said "The whole evening was very interesting". Read the reviews (pdf).

Subjects covered included secrecy and cronyism of the current NHS system, media monitoring, Harold Shipman, clinical power vacuums, democracy at the General Dental Council, dentistry in 1981, over-regulation, whether employed nurses need insurance against medical negligence. Derek's talk was was accompanied by presentations from IFA Richard Lishman, barrister Sunil Abeyewickreme and financially supported by Janice Charlton from DPAS and Stephen Hewitt from Wesleyan. The next venue is County Durham on Tuesday 22nd November. Book your place on-line. Admittance is free to all members of the dental team.

Would you think differently about a report from a dental research conference if you knew that it had been held in Bali? Does expansion of the private sector cause a 'death spiral' in the NHS? ...

Being Fat Rots Your Teeth, claims BDHF

I know it's the silly season and I have just been on a journalism course so my radar is probably on full alert but it seems to me that the quality of dental media releases has gone downhill. Every publisher gets many releases a day, usually in the form of a title, a few hundred words and a picture. It is very easy just to cut and paste these into your publication and Editors know that they must resist this temptation, however sometimes you need your job to be easy. As a result you will often read the same short 'article' across the various dental magazines but a recent media release from the British Dental Health Foundation was downright misleading...

Dispatches - the DPA response

The dust has settled on Channel 4’s Dispatches programme and with the benefit of 24 hours hindsight, it is starting to look more and more benign. Certainly it was a talking point among the patients who watched it and there are a few dentists who are having to answer awkward questions from their patients about whether their recent private root treatment should have been done on the NHS. ...
